// Interview

Ohoi Records

Really super lazy typical records label style, but I never get bored of connecting.

ED ED

Halo Nggo. So, what have you been up to lately?

Nggo Nggo

All good. Good food, good activity, good sound, good book. Sorry for the delay, around one year, to respond to your text Mr ED. Thank you for the interview. Ave Satani!

ED ED

I'd like to know more about Ohoi Records. When did you start it, and what was the story behind its creation?

Nggo Nggo

It was starting 14 years ago when I was in high school, and I have 2 partners who are also members of Ohoi Records: Agus Kepalakosong and Made Yaslow.

The story of the birth of Ohoi Records is after I connected with record labels like Teriak Recs, Relamati Recs, Maximum Noise Recs, Grindlover Production, Noise Abuse Productions. They all gave me some ideas to make a record label who can handle distribution and can join co-releases.

Then I started to make Ohoi Records, and the first time it was an online distro for noisecore, grindcore, any kind of extreme sound. Ohoi Records' first release was a joint co-release for VA 11 Detik Haram with Relamati Recs, and Agathocles – Angry Anthems 1985-2010 tape version co-released with Maximum Noise Recs.

In 2014 Ohoi Records had a hiatus situation. In 2015 I started again, and I run and control it with more focus on harsh noise, PE, and industrial sound.

ED ED

Is Ohoi Records an online-only label, or do you also have a physical store people can visit?

Nggo Nggo

For distribution only online. I don't have a shop. But when people want to come to my studio in Denpasar, make sure you make an appointment first. I busy being slave.

ED ED

How many releases has Ohoi Records put out so far? Could you list them for us?

Nggo Nggo

Who creates the artwork for Ohoi Records' releases?

Nggo Nggo

For handling design artwork, every release has a different collaboration with an artist, and I just handle the layout. Ohoi Recs has collaborated with:

• Gede Agus Kepalakosonk @kepalakosonk — Grintabachan, Escape From Hell, Er66ot / Uhyeah! split tape

• Gilang Propagila @gilangpropag — Escape From Hell EP 2013 floppy disk

• Ardhi F @bl00dandsteel — Escape From Hell / Free Speech

• Sanscriptum @sanscriptum — VA Amok tape, Dorlop Nails / Glibly Ninja

• Olwin A — Grintabachan / Acidwall split tape

• Rawpovver @rawpvver — JagaJaga / Ruditradio

• Molotmira @raspad — nyctalops. / sooncrazy

ED ED

What do you look for when deciding whether to release an artist or band on Ohoi Records?

Nggo Nggo

I don't really have a type of project style, but now I open call for harsh noise, PE, dark ambient, any kind of extreme electronics. Please send your sample or link track to grintabachan@gmail.com. If I like your project, I will reply to your email.

ED ED

Besides running the label, you also have your own noise project. Could you tell us a bit about it?

Nggo Nggo

Yes, I have the harsh noise / PE project Grintabachan. It's my first project, already 14 years and still running.

Noise On The Beach is my noisecore project with Oduns (Sooncrazy, Noise Soneta) and Doni (Terror of Dynamite Attack, Percy Jerk-Off!).

Konsultasi is harsh noise / junk elektronik, Incapacitants worshipper style with Dead Squad / MK9 thema. It's a project with Putaw (Er666ot, Stylucipher).

And the last project, Death Orgasm Connector, is with Derian (Realism, Morbid Saddam). It's more focused on a style like Italian PE and death industrial.

ED ED

What do you think about the role of printed zines in today's digital era? Do you think they still matter?

Nggo Nggo

Yes, it must always exist. A lot of people have a fetish with physical books and zines more than digital. But digital helps me to get access to archives.

Chaos Non Musica

ED ED

Could you tell us about Chaos Non Musica? As one of its initiators, we'd love to hear how it started, what it's about, and what it means to you.

Nggo Nggo

It's a small gang who have the same interest for handling illegal tours, making parties, do-it-with-your-friends, interdisciplinary, doing fun action like the book The Temporary Autonomous Zone / Poetic Terrorism by Hakim Bey. You all must read it.

ED ED

Could you recommend some noise or experimental artists from Bali that people should check out?

Nggo Nggo

Bali has a lot of good projects, and for the electronic scene it's like a neoliberalism symbol for electronic music in Indonesia now. People from everywhere come to Bali wanting to be a DJ, make an electronic project, and get a job in a club or beach club, even when they have bad taste. They don't care and just want to get a job and career in art. Is it fun? Yes.

Behind this bullshit, we can meet a lot of people who are interested in going to gigs and supporting, like buying merch or records. Some recommended projects:

Sooncrazy, Dullywave, Glibly Ninja, Jaga-Jaga, Melancholia Terror, Stylucipher, Kill The Master, Yami No Oto, Sanglah Slayer, The Hands, Sora Na Aya, Matrix Collapse, Harsh Reality, Er666ot, Nirkind, Kalidante, Noise Soneta, Realism, Morbid Saddam, Morbid Love, Satanaisu, Madharupa, J2,1, Dyaus Pita, Usada Putra, Marlhill, Putu Septa, Marisadia, Berry Mono, SPBU, Pest Anarkotech, Umat, Svara Futura, San Drums, La Petite Mort, Si Kucing Hitam, and more.

ED ED

Ha, that's it, Nggo. Any final words for our readers?

Nggo Nggo

Hahahah. SUPPORT THE UNDERGROUND, CONSUME!!
